May 25th Beer Buy: Witbier

Posted in

I've started a group beer buy with coworkers and I'm opening it up to people who I don't work with but will pick it up at my house. Close friends, neighbors etc. How it works: you commit to buy one or more six packs. I'll put together a buy that will give you a variety of beers on that style. The more people, the more variety in your six pack. Each month is opt-in, no commitment or long term contracts.

This months style is Witbier, a belgian style wheat ale typically spiced with coriander and orange peel. Options that I can choose from are:

Celis White
Ommegang Witte

I think I got more evaporation than expected, not more efficiency.

How I manage Drupal Upgrades with Lots O' Symlinks

Posted in

This is cut from a quick and dirty email that I wrote to someone. It may not be well organized or explained, but I thought it was better posted here than nowhere at all.

Ok so the trick that I use is to use the multiple site feature of drupal to make upgrades easier. I use several symbolic links on the file system to make it all work let me describe it here.

My hosting company allows me to host multiple domains on the same account. by default the addon domains document roots are sub folders of my main domain's document root. for example it's like this:

~/public_html

Exciting Times Lie Ahead

Some of you know, many of you don't. So here is the formal announcement. I'm starting a new job on March 15th. I'm going to a start-up company where I'm going to be 'head' of IT. I say 'head' in quotes because it is still a very small company at the moment that has big plans you can probably guess the size of the IT department once I start.

Breaking Up is Hard to do

No way in hell I'm getting size 40 pants.

If you follow me on Twitter, or are a friend on Facebook then you no doubt know that I'm working on losing a lot of weight. Hell nearly all of my status updates are in the weight loss topic and the Beer talk has been a little lean as of late. The biggest surprise to me so far, well other than watching my weight drop, is that I'm inspiring other people to take a similar look at their health.

Hey Cider People, I got a question for you.

I'm making a cider without using sulfates and my yeast starter wasn't ready on Saturday when I got the juice. In order to keep the wild yeast at bay I put the carboy in my cooler at 33 F. Now my yeast starter is stepped up and ready to ferment. I was going to pull the carboy out of the cooler and let it warm up so I could pitch the yeast after work but I noticed that there was a fair bit of sediment that had settled to the bottom of the carboy. I put the carboy back in the cooler and now I ask you:

Campaign Ad

To: Jason Altmire
Subject: American Steel

Your Campaign Ad, where you play it's a good thing that you went to the border to look at the steel to make sure it was American. You had nothing better to do than go there and look for yourself at the steel? Nobody in the area that you could telephone? They couldn't FAX you a purchase order?

Melissa Hart won't have to run any attack ads if you keep running winners like this.

NOT - Missing from the Internet, Beaver County Canoe Trails.

When I was in scouts I took part in Canoe Trails. Canoe trails was a high adventure program that was run by Explorer Post 488 in Vanport, PA. It was run by George Wildman. We went canoing in Kipawa Canada. There is almost nothing on the internet about Canoe Trails or Explorer Post 488 which I find amazing. Maybe by making this post someone who has more information will stumble upon it and help me find out it's current status.

Pittsburgh vs. Philly Beer

Posted in

I found this story on Go Magazine about how Philly Beer Week and how Pittsburgh is a better city for beer than Philadelphia. While I like the sentiment I have to strongly disagree that Pittsburgh is a better beer city than our arch rivals across the state.

I Pledged

So I finally did it, I became a member for public media. While I would of rather given my money to WDUQ radio for all the NPR that I listen to. I never brought myself to pull the trigger.

But this morning I was flipping channels and saw Chef Kevin from Alchemy on a cooking show, it caught my attention and I watched him make jello noodles for his bison dish. That guy is nuts.
